Subtitle enhancement
Fix YouTube's fragmented auto-captions with punctuation and better line breaks—free for everyone.
YouTube auto-captions often lack punctuation and break mid-sentence. Subtitle enhancement adds punctuation and re-breaks lines so they read like real subtitles—and it’s free.
In the subtitle menu, this option is labeled Enhanced (shown as (enhanced) in the English UI).
What it does and doesn’t do
- Does: Add punctuation and re-break existing auto-captions. If auto-captions already have punctuation, it keeps what’s there, fills gaps, and smooths line breaks.
- Doesn’t: Re-transcribe audio from scratch—it won’t necessarily fix recognition errors.
- Free and members get the same feature: Identical functionality. Each tier uses a separate queue—member queues don’t share with free queues, so members are usually faster at peak times.
Why it’s free
Subtitle enhancement runs on a model we trained ourselves and needs GPU compute. It’s costly to maintain, but we keep it open to everyone because we want more people to enjoy readable subtitles.

Three steps to enable
- Open a regular (non-live) YouTube video with auto-captions.
- Open the extension → Subtitles tab.
- In the primary or secondary subtitle menu, pick the option labeled Enhanced (or
(enhanced)).
You’ll see “Queued” or “Generating” while it runs. When it’s done, you get cleaned-up subtitles you can use, translate, or practice with like any other track.
About “Repair” in the menu
Sometimes Enhanced and Repair both appear. “Repair” doesn’t mean subtitles are broken, and it isn’t always instant:

Troubleshooting
- Stuck in queue: Free queues are busier—that’s normal. Member queues are usually faster; both slow down at peak times.
- Can’t pick Enhanced: Confirm the video has auto-generated captions and isn’t a live stream.
- Enhancement failed / timed out (older wording for the same feature): Try again later, or use member Whisper.
- Very long videos may be rejected.
When to use Whisper instead
If the video has no auto-captions at all, enhancement can’t help—use member Whisper to generate subtitles from audio.
